Community Life: Being Community

A Call to a Common Heart |Reflections

The quality of community life depends on the quality of the spiritual life of each sister and the quality of their experiences of prayer together. The sisters meet regularly to pray, share sacred scripture and celebrate liturgy in small community groups or in larger congregational gatherings.

There are many opportunities for us to be community to each other as we celebrate special feasts, anniversaries and events of significance such as the profession of new members or the death of the sisters who have been our faithful ‘companions on the journey’.

Because of our human fragility, community life is a challenge and we need forgiveness for our failures. We are called to ‘be compassionate to others as Christ is compassionate to us’. We are inspired by the words of our father founder who encouraged the sisters in the rule of 1867:

It shall be the constant effort of the sisters
On all occasions
To lighten each other’s burdens

As we share our experience of community in the areas where we live, pray and work, our many colleagues and contacts in the wider community enrich and extend us. We share some snapshots that evidence the vitality and joy of community interaction – of Josephite hospitality to one another.
