Vowed Life

The Vows| Symbols

The Sisters of St Joseph of Lochinvar are called to faithfulness to their Baptismal commitment to follow Jesus' way of life, by public profession of the three vows of chastity, poverty and obedience.

Sometimes called the evangelical counsels, the vows provide us with guidance to a way of life focussed on Jesus and his gospel. This focus gives meaning and purpose to our lives and to our service of others.

As Josephite women
We embrace the vowed life
As a way of being
By which we freely commit ourselves
To journey into deep intimacy with God
(Constitutions p. 9)

Further insights into the vowed life can be found in Perfectae Caritatis, which can be translated as 'Perfect Love' or 'Complete love', which is the reason for and the key to living the vowed life of a religious.

The Dogmatic Constitution on the Church - Lumen Gentium (Light of all nations) article 43 also gives clarification of our understanding of religious life, the evangelical counsels and vowed life.
