Catalyst  Clemente Newcastle
The
Catalyst Clemente Program

Catalyst Clemente delivers accredited university courses in the humanities.  On completion of four subjects participants qualify for a Certificate of Liberal Arts from Australian Catholic University (ACU). Each subject runs over 12 weeks, comprising one two-hour lecture and one two-hour "shared learning" session per week.  There is always a mid semester break.

To date students have studied the following subjects:

Introduction to Ethics

Indigenous People: Past and Present.

Sociology.

On July 27th 2010, nine students, accompanied by their learning partners, began Sociology with Dr. Wendy Elsworth from Newcastle University. While they started with some anxiety about this new area of study, they soon were immersed in the exploration of society that Wendy led them into, and were excited by the insights they gained.

Unfortunately Wendy had to withdraw half way through the unit due to illness. Students were then joined by Michelle Black from Australian Catholic University who was able to complete the unit with them. The unit ended with presentations which enabled students to share what they had discovered in their study of a particular social issue.

Students and Learning Partners were grateful to both Wendy and Michelle for their commitment and passion.

The Catalyst Clemente Program will recommence in Newcastle when its sustainability has been secured. The next subject will be Introduction to Ethics.
