Congratulations Sr Carmel

Sr Carmel Hanson rsj was named Newcastle’s Woman of the Year for 2024 for her work at the House of Hospitality located today in Broadmeadow.

Thirty-three years ago, Sr Carmel saw a need and in the style of her Josephite founders who said never see a need without doing something about it, was inspired to reach out to women who were homeless.

The House offers shelter to women and children fleeing domestic violence, asylum seekers, women from detoxification programs, and others in need.

Sr Carmel continually advocates for an increase in the availability of social housing as she insists that housing is a basic human right.

On 8th March, International Women’s Day, Mr Tim Crakanthorp, Stare Member for Newcastle presented Sr Carmel with her award.

He noted the many ways she has contributed to people in Newcastle as a teacher, a school principal, a lawyer and psychologist as well being the founder of the House of Hospitality.

International Women’s Day is a global day, celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

Inspire Inclusion was the theme for International Women’s Day 2024 because when we inspire others to understand and value women’s inclusion, we forge a better world.

In accepting the award, Sr Carmel said she did so on behalf of the many women working in many and various ways to make a difference in the lives of so many people, thus ultimately forging a better world for everyone.
