Almost one hundred years ago on the 15th January 1925, a third child was born into the Schumacher family of Clarence Town in New South Wales.
Young Eileen grew up wild and free roaming the bush, delighting in the wonders of the world around her and soaking up the teaching of the little rural, one – teacher school there. Such was the beginning of life for the one so many knew as Sister Jane Frances.
Hence, it was not surprising to see a great roll up of her former students who gathered with the Sisters of St Joseph and family members at Christ the King Church in Mayfield Wes to celebrate the completion of the century of loving and living that characterised our Jane.
Sr Carmel Moore who had spent so many years in companionship with Jane reflected on a life well lived by one who had marched to a different drum and who proclaimed the law of love above all else.
Father Geoff Mulhearn, who along with fellow teachers, Fathers Paul Mulconry, Bill Burston and Greg Arnold concelebrated the Mass, recalled the influence Jane had as an inspiring teacher and principal.
Having farewelled her with prayer and incense, committing her to the care of the Angels and martyrs, the procession from the Church was solemnly accompanied by the ex-students’ guard of honour.
Memories were then continued at the Hexham Bowling Club where the collection of photos brought the smiling and mischievous presence of Jane to life once again.
In peace, her mortal remains now rest in the Sisters’ section of the Lochinvar Cemetery and her untamed, unique spirit entertains the heavenly hosts with poetry readings.
