A New Era for Josephite Schools

A new era began with the start of the 2018 school year for two schools founded by the Sisters of St  Joseph of Lochinvar in the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle. Both St Joseph’s College Lochinvar and St Mary’s College Gateshead welcomed a cohort of Year 11 students.

Both schools will become comprehensive Year 7 to 12 Colleges with their students able to sit for the HSC in 2019. For St Joseph’s College it marks the return of senior classes after some twenty five years as a Year 7-10 campus of All Saints College in Maitland.  For St Mary’s College it marks a new chapter in the school’s history since its beginnings in 1964.

St Mary’s College Principal, Larry Keating said: “We have embraced a new beginning. Our shared responsibility is to continue to build on the rich legacy of the Sisters of St Joseph for the benefit of current and future generations of students, parents, teachers and teaching support staff.”  This acknowledgement of the schools’ beginnings is obvious in the new school crests that have been developed from the existing crests.

The new era at St Joseph’s Lochinvar extended to having a new principal. Though new to her current role, Mrs Patricia Hales is no stranger to St Joseph’s College as she is a former student of the College and a former member of staff.

In the Opening and Commissioning Liturgy of the Word at St Joseph’s Mrs Hales drew attention to the words of the Prophet Jeremiah:

I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you,  plans to give you hope and a future.  (Jeremiah 29: 11)

She told the students that these words form the focus for the coming year, motivating them to bring their plans, hopes and dreams to fruition.  Large banners displayed the values of belonging, responsibility, respect, compassion and faith that students and staff will strive to embrace during the year.

Fr James Lunn, parish priest of Cessnock and Kurri Kurri in commissioning the four newly elected College leaders and four House leaders said, These badges marked with the motto of St Joseph’s, are a sign of your ministry as college leaders.   After addresses by Noah and Abbey, two of the College Leaders, the ceremony concluded with the singing of the traditional Lochinvar Hymn.
