Well-being Economy – a Josephite Resource

The Josephite Laudato Si’ Action Plan Team presents its fourth Conversation Package in the five-part, Urgent Hope series.

Titled Wellbeing Economy for a Flourishing People and Planet, this community and educational resource has been developed by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart in collaboration with the Sisters of St Joseph Lochinvar to spark discussion, inform and inspire people of hope.

The Wellbeing Economy conversation package takes the form of a flipping book, centres on Pope Francis’ call for a rethink, a reset in how society prioritises and manages the needs of all people and the planet.

In Laudate Deum, Pope Francis wrote, Climate change has to do not only with physics or with biology, but also with the economy and the way we conceive it. The mentality of maximum gain at minimal cost, disguised in terms of reasonableness, progress and illusory promises, makes impossible any sincere concern for our common home and any real preoccupation about assisting the poor and the needy discarded by our society.  (Para 31)

The resource draws attention to texts that relate to biblical notions of flourishing and to the wisdom contained in the principles of Catholic Social Teaching.

The lead author, Sister Adrienne Gallie rsj, points to the rising of many global voices calling for change and offering alternative models of economy. Sr Adrienne has attended international conferences and ministers in the wellbeing economy.

Wellbeing Economy is an invitation to transform our lives, our goals, our relationships and our faith. Use the questions and Pope Francis’ quotes from Laudate Deum to spark discussion, share countering views and form ways to move forward.

Today, a new economy inspired by Francis of Assisi can and must become an economy of friendship with the earth and an economy of peace.  It is a question of transforming an economy that kills, into an economy of life, in all its aspects.  (Pope Francis 2022 Economy of Francesco event)
